Head of the Direction Professor Tinatin Kldiashvili
Geographic position of Georgia, the specific character of its vernacular culture and some branches of local agriculture, especially, sheep farming which is associated with wool harvesting, contributed to the development of textile production in the country. Natural dyes traditionally applied to yarns produce a rich variety of colours. Wool is still used to manufacture mats, carpets, felt and various accessories.
The tradition of textile manufacture prepared grounds for textile studies at the Academy. The Chair of Textile opened at the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1959, which contributed to the development of contemporary Georgian textile design.
