Textile Design

The Head of the Direction: Tinatin Kldiashvili, Ful Professor

The geographical location of Georgia, its ethnocultural originality, and the development of certain agricultural fields, especially sheep-breeding (production of woolen yarn), have promoted establishment of textile production. By means of natural dyes, used in the past to dye yarn, was achieved a rich spectrum of colours. Carpets, rugs, thick felt items and accessories have been created in the past and are still created today. The existence of textile production tradition in Georgia has generated a need to study it in the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. In 1959 a Chair of Textile was established at the Faculty of Decorative-Applied Arts. The establishment of this field has promoted the development of contemporary Georgian textile design.
