Head of the Direction - Nana Kuprashvili, Full Professor

At the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, the only higher educational institution in Georgia, providing studies in the field of restoration, the Direction of Restoration was operating since 1966, though only as a branch specialty at the Faculties of Fine Art and Architecture . In September, 2004, The branch specialty was closed and an independent Faculty of Restoration was established. In 2005, the Faculty of Restoration was joined by the Direction of Art History and Theory and the Faculty of Restoration, Art History and Theory was formed. Establishment of the Faculty of Restoration has fundamentally changed the principles of teaching conservation and restoration in the fields of architecture and painting. The directions of conservation/restoration of metal, glass and ceramic artefacts, previously never existing at the academy, have been established. Implementation of a completely new and complex approach to the cultural heritage, taken place in Georgia, is emanated from co-existence of the directions of conservation/restoration and art history and theory at the faculty. In the faculty’s study program the special emphasis is set on the art historian - historical, technological, and diagnostic research of the cultural heritage artefacts, as well as, on studies of the original and conservation materials, preventative measures, fundamentals of conservation theory, philosophy and legislation, professional ethics.
