Head of the Direction - Ani Kldiashvili, Full Professor
In 1967 a Chair of Art History and Theory was established at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. For years it was headed by professor Levan Rcheulishvili. Since its establishment, the faculty has actively being collaborating with the leading research centre of the Georgian art, the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art, the key academic figures of which (Vakhtang Beridze, Gayane Alibegashvili, Natela Aladashvili, Meri Karbelashvili, Kiti Machabeli, Nodar Janberidze, Leila Khuskivadze, Iuza Khuskivadze, etc.) have been and are teaching the students for years. The faculty’s graduates have also joined the academy’s professional staff, having managed to become currently the leading professionals in the field of art history and theory. The years long collaboration between the Direction of Art History and Theory and the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art resulted to creation of a fruitful soil for the field development. At present, the Memorandum on Collaboration is signed between these two institutions. It encourages promotion of the traditionally acting collaboration. For 45 years, the faculty grows the researchers of the Georgian art, who have gained high achievements internationally.
